Assassin's Creed 2 - Gameplay Trailer

Civilization 5

Ca in orice joc Civilization, puterea militara, diplomatia si inovatia vor juca roluri importante in castigarea suprematiei mondiale.

Arsenal of Democracy

Arsenal of Democracy va avea o mecanica a luptei imbunatatita, precum si noi misiuni sau campanii.

Commander: Conquest of the Americas

Commander: Conquest of the Americas este un joc de strategie dezvoltat de Nitro Games, care va fi lansat de Paradox Interactive in Q3 2010.

Jucatorii vor prelua una dintre cele 6 natii europene doritoare sa cucereasca America si vor incepe aventura de colonizare in secoulul 16.

Rise of Prussia

Rise of Prussia este un joc de strategie dezvoltat de AGEOD, care va fi lansat de Paradox Interactive in martie 2010. Actiunea jocului va avea loc intre anii 1756-1763, jucatorii avand ocazia sa conduca armatele Imperiului Prusac sau puterile opozante, Austria, Rusia si Franta.

God Eater

I’m Lovin’ It

Every once in a while I come across a thoughtful, well-written blog that I keep up with. Recently, I came across Doc Love’s rather unassuming blog. Like Michael’s thoughts over at the Brainy Gamer, Doc Love reflects upon the past, present and future of video games as a gamer and a cultural scholar. The latest post focuses on understanding the experience of playing Half-Life 2 – through the lens of dystopian literature and film, and through an examination of the player’s part in assuming the role of the protagonist Gordon Freeman. The links Doc Love draws between Blade Runner, Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, and the game are all apt of course, but I am more struck by the way the article is framed through Barthes’s essay Death of the Author.

Pictured above: The alien tripod creature in The War of the Worlds, as illustrated by Alvim Correa. The resemblance to the synth “Striders” in Half-Life 2 is anything but accidental. Image courtesy of Wikipedia.

Like the Russian philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin who has much to say on the subject of creativity and its roots in traditions of speech, Barthes seems similarly claim that we must see any creative work as inherently a part of the historical and cultural tools that its creator drew upon, and what we as us readers draw upon when we interpret their creations. Even the wonderful title of the post, “Everything Old is New Again“, reminds me of a quote from an ethnomethodologist named Garfinkel who said that our social circumstances tend to happen again and again “for another first time” – that there is a novelty to even the most ritualized ‘Hello!’ greeting. As a creative work, Half-Life 2 is of course a recombination of its many cultural and literary influences – yet it presents us with a dystopian future “for another first time”. On a side note, I would add H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds as an important literary and aesthetic influence… the apocalyptic London immediately came to mind when I first saw ‘City 17

Follow these 4 steps and you will be playing Freeciv in no time!

InstallWindows users, see Install-Windows instructions. MacOSX users, see Install-MacOSX instructions. Install the software on your local computer: If you downloaded a precompiled binary package for your platform, install it using the method of the packaging system. If you downloaded the source code, unpack and compile it. On Unix-like systems, this can be done as follows: 1.Change to the directory where you want to perform the installation work; /tmp is often a good choice. 2.Unpack the file you downloaded (see unzipping). The files are put into a subdirectory; cd into it. 1.If you're too impatient to read and follow the INSTALL and other documentation to be found there, try the command ./configure && make installand hope for the best. However, you will probably need to pass some options to ./configure, call gmake instead of make, or install some auxiliary software packages first. On Mandrake/Mandriva, you will need to install versions of libgdk_pixbuf2.0_0-devel libpango1.0-devel libatk-1.0_0-devel libgtk+2.0_0-devel (this one last) [edit] Start the clientStart the client by executing the command civclient. This must be done from your GUI (X) interface. If you installed a precompiled package, it may provide a shortcut in the form of a Freeciv icon or something similar. A dialog window appears with the following alternatives: Start New Game lets you start and customize a new game and launch a server to host the game. Start Scenario Game lets you play one of the scenarios which are available. Load Saved Game allows you to continue playing on a saved game. Connect to Network Game gives the possibility to search for a server using an Internet Metaserver or search for a server on your Local Area Network. Internet Metaserver allows you to select one of the current available servers elsewhere on the net. Searching for servers on your Local Area Network uses multicast to locate other Freeciv servers, and will not detect servers properly if your server is behind a firewall. If the server is in Pregame state, it still accepts new players. If the game has already started, you can only connect as an existing player. [edit] Start the game[edit] If you play alone, on your own server:To play with 4 computer players, type set aifill 5 on the server prompt. On the server prompt, type start to start the game. Change back to the client window and pick your nation. [edit] If you play with others:On the server prompt, you can issue the command cmdlevel ctrl so clients are allowed to give server commands. (On public civservers, we do this for you.) In the client window, you can type /start. You may want to wait for players and discuss the setup with them first. Pick your nation and wait for others to pick theirs. If you leave now, you will be removed from the game. If someone won't or can't pick a nation (use the /list command to find out), you can /ai them or /cut them from the game altogether. More details and options can be found elsewhere on the site. Now that you've gotten it running, you'll want to play your first few games. It is recommended that you try playing solitaire a few times, so that you can get a feel for how things work, but this is not necessary. You can learn by playing with others as well.

Games for Non-Gamers

So you haven’t played many games, but want to get your feet wet?

If you have 5 minutes per game:

•Try out another fun game mechanic with Dolphin Olympics.

•Take a look at an “artsy” advergame: BMW’s PACE.
•Give a business sim a spin with Coffee Shop.
If you have over 30 minutes per game:

•Download FreeCiv, a free clone of Civilization, one of the best strategy games of all time.
•Try one of the first (popular) “casual” massively multiplayer online games launched in the US: Puzzle Pirates
•Experience America’s Army, the US Army’s recruiting game.

How video games are transforming the future of [music]

My second guest post on the New York Times Freakonomics blog is up; in this one, I explore how two video games, Rock Band and Guitar Hero are fundamentally changing the way that music industry executives think about promoting and selling music. While this story is interesting in and of itself, I chose it because it’s a powerful example of the way that games can be used to reinvent moribund markets. Almost anything can be turned into a game, with enough creativity and effort.

If gamers ran the world…

Following on to the recent Pew finding that 53% of all American adults play games, it looks like one of Obama’s key information planners is a dedicated World of Warcraft player, causing gamers to analyze his playing style for policy hints. On a similar note, the essay “If Gamers Ran the World” is a thought-provoking article on what games have to teach, even if we don’t always agree with some of its more far-out conclusions.

Writing Worth Reading: Write the Game

Although Keira posted a comment several months ago in response to the rather dystopian sketch I scribbled of the BioWare sale, I accidentally overlooked her blog, Write the Game, until recently. A writer, musician, composer, and seasoned gamer among other things, Keira Peney has the uncanny ability of consistently writing thoughtful and organized articles.

I’ve spent the last few days reading her impressive back-catalogue of posts and while I think all of them are certainly worth your time, her six-part composition on the history of video games stood out for me. These articles demonstrate Keira’s intimate knowledge of retro games, a keen eye for details, and impeccable research skills. For someone born in 1984 (the year of King’s Quest I, Championship Lode Runner, and Seven Cities of Gold) she sure as hell knows her Dune II and Command and Conquer – two games that I spent countless hours playing and subsequently debating about with my junior high school friends. If you’re at all interested in reading a thoughtful piece on the history of video games (and their developers) with some interesting analyses, be sure to read the entire series of articles (start at the bottom).

Edit: Keira posted a reply to the lively ongoing discussion started by Michael over the Brainy Gamer on “photorealism” in video games. I’m hoping to continue the discussion in my next post, and attempt to outline some new ideas on the subject.

Changing the games

The spread of “news games”
CNET recently published this interesting article about news games — simple online games that are designed to promote or simply riff off of a current news topic (like the spread of swine flu.) The article cites several examples, including Swinefighter, a game in which players are tasked with killing off viruses within 20 seconds. Swinefighter incorporates a running total of all the viruses killed by everyone who has played the game, so at the time CNET published it’s article, we know that 14.5 million virtual viruses have been wiped out by players.

This begs the question: why isn’t the government using games like these to educate the public? It doesn’t cost much to develop a simple online flash game, and the cost certainly pales in comparison to the harms caused by a public that is both panicked by and undereducated about pandemic-related issues. Or in the words of the article: “It’s a shame the innovation (of providing CDC advice about swine flu in Swinefighters) was left to two entrepreneurs.”
Games that teach finance
In a new game, Celebrity Calamity, individuals learn how to handle their finances. What makes it especially interesting is that it is aimed at an unusual group of individuals who we don’t usually think of as game players - lower income women, especially single mothers. It turns out that games can make a big difference, as summarized here: players “showed a 15-30% increase in confidence in their financial skills, and a 55-70% improvement in knowledge of concepts like credit limits, credit vs. debit, APR, and finance charges.” The game is made by Enspire Learning and the D2D Fund, and, in the interest of disclosure, I have been an advisor to the project.
Honda uses games to encourage efficient driving
Popular Science has published a delightful article that describes how 2010 Honda Insight (a hybrid vehicle) uses some principles of video games to encourage more fuel efficient driving behavior. The car’s multi-information display includes a progress meter — a (leafless) virtual plant. The plant’s empty branches grow leaves over time, as a result of efficient driving behavior recorded by the car’s onboard computer. The multi-information display helps teach the driver how to drive more efficiently (and thus, gain leaves) by signaling the impact of excessive stopping and starting, inefficient acceleration, etc.

This isn’t a short-term game, either. Over the car’s entire lifetime, a thrifty driver can earn a second tier of leaves, then a flower on each branch. The screen will eventually display a trophy if a driver performs well enough for a long enough period of time.

What I like about this idea is not just that it makes fuel-efficient driving more fun. No, what I really like about this is that, if Honda is smart, they could turn this into an incentive to purchase more Honda vehicles in the future. After all, when the time comes to purchase another car, you wouldn’t want to lose the virtual trophy that you had worked so hard to earn, would you? Well, why should you have to lose it? Just purchase another vehicle from Honda, and all the trophies you earned in your previous vehicle can be transferred over to the new one! Of course, it would work better if you could earn trophies for more activities in addition to efficient driving (and it would work better still if the accumulation of trophies led to concrete real-world benefits, like a 5% discount on your next vehicle, a t-shirt with the Honda logo on it, etc…)
EU says games are good for children
A report from the European parliament has concluded that video games are not only safe for children to play, but actually helpful because games teach children “essential life skills.” Add this to the pile of research that has built up over the last several years in rebuttal of (generally unsubstantiated) criticism that games trigger aggression and have no redeeming qualities.

Key quote from the article: There is no firm proof that playing them has an automatic negative impact on children’s behaviour, for example by causing aggression, said the report from the committee on the internal market and consumer protection. Instead, “video games can stimulate learning of facts and skills such as strategic thinking, creativity, cooperation and innovative thinking, which are important skills in the information society.”
